UUP councillors used in DUP literature

Three Ulster Unionist councillors have spoken out after pictures of them were used in DUP election literature in Lagan Valley. Lisburn City Councillors Ronnie Crawford and Bill Gardiner-Watson as well as Banbridge District Councillor John Hanna said:

"We wish to make it clear that we do not support Jeffrey Donaldson or the DUP, and will not be voting for them. Mr Donaldson never sought permission to use our images in his literature, and had he done so it would have been refused.

"We however welcome the fact that the DUP have been forced to use images of UUP Councillors in their literature. It demonstrates how much Northern Ireland relies on the UUP at a council level, that so many photographs at key events and achievements have our representatives in them.

"The campaign to save maternity services in the Lagan Valley Hospital was led by the UUP, and it was a UUP Minister who took the very wise decision to overturn the recommendation of the Trust. The regeneration of Dromore is an issue that UUP members of Banbridge Council have pushed for many years, however the lack of influence in Parliament that comes with an MP who is detached from the political mainstream has hindered efforts.

"We have been campaigning in recent weeks for Conservative and Unionist candidates in our respective areas. The House of Commons Speaker has recently spoken of how small parties like the DUP have no infulence or allies in Parliament, and we agree.

"Jeffrey Donaldson is a candidate whose voice is almost irrelevent at Westminster, but in Daphne Trimble Lagan Valley would have an MP with real influence at the heart of government."
