Hamilton supports retention of Full-Time Reserve

Harry Hamilton, the Conservatives and Unionists candidate for Upper Bann in the Westminster Election has supported calls to retain the Full-Time Police Reserve.

Mr Hamilton said;

"The news that the Chief Constable is considering delaying the phasing out of the Full-Time Reserve is a vindication of what many Unionists have been saying for some time.

It is a recognition that the security situation on the ground in many parts of the Province is serious. There has been a recent upsurge in dissident republican activity with bomb attacks at the Policing Board Headquarters in Belfast, Gilnahirk, Palace Barracks in Holywood, Newry Courthouse and Newtownhamilton Police Station in addition to numerous security alerts at various locations across Northern Ireland including here in Upper Bann. If the Chief Constable feels that he needs extra officers to help combat the very real threat posed by so-called dissident republicans, then I for one would fully support him in his efforts.

There is however one other aspect which must be borne in mind, namely the Full-Time Reservists themselves.

These officers deserve and require some stability and job security, and they cannot be treated in the shoddy manner which they have been. These officers have mortgages to pay and families to take care of. It is simply not good enough for their futures to be decided on a whim. They are experienced professionals who have served the entire community and taken great risks to do so. This uncertainty is no way to repay their loyalty and their service."
