Grasp of achievable policy commitments beyond SDLP

Responding to "ludicrous and desperate" statements by the SDLP in relation to the Conservatives and Unionists manifesto, a spokesperson has said that Dolores Kelly appears to have struggled with a basic understanding of the document.

"It is unfortunate that Dolores Kelly appears to have lost the ability to read.

"Even though this is a Westminster election, and the two issues she raises are devolved, the Conservatives and Unionists manifesto makes clear commitments on health and education.

"On page 46 the section of our manifesto entitled 'Back our NHS' starts, 'Conservatives and Unionists back the NHS. We support the plans of Conservative colleagues in England to increase health spending every year and will seek the same in Northern Ireland'. There follows three pages of commitments to improve our NHS.

"On page 50 the opening paragraph of the section entitled 'Building on excellence in Northern Ireland's schools' says 'We will resist attempts by Sinn Fein to destroy our education system. Not all children, however, are achieving their full potential. We need to ensure excellence, diversity and choice for all.' There follows two pages of commitments to improve our schools.

"Perhaps we should have included a section entitled 'learning to read for SDLP Assembly Members'.

"Clearly Ms Kelly has trouble getting her head around a manifesto that contains both national UK and local Northern Ireland commitments.

"But then given the fact that not a single word from the SDLP manifesto will ever be implemented because they will never form the UK government that's hardly surprising.

"The SDLP is another party here fighting the election to form a tiny opposition group at Westminster.

"Only the Conservatives and Unionists are fighting to form the government."
